Function and form

Treated together, in one operation

A blocked nose is rarely just an annoyance — it affects sleep, exercise and energy. When the cause is structural — a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates, or collapse of the internal or external nasal valves — surgery can make a real difference. Septorhinoplasty corrects those problems and lets Mr Paun improve the external shape at the same time, so you only go through one anaesthetic and one recovery.

At your consultation Mr Paun examines the nasal airway in detail and uses 3D imaging to show you the planned external result. The surgical plan is then built around the actual cause of your obstruction — not a one-size-fits-all approach. Read more about Mr Paun.

At a glance

Septoplasty vs rhinoplasty vs septorhinoplasty

Septoplasty

Straightens the septum to improve breathing. No change to the outside of the nose.

Rhinoplasty

Changes the external shape of the nose. Doesn’t address the septum or airway.

Septorhinoplasty

Both, together — corrects the airway and refines the appearance in one operation and one recovery.

What it can correct

The problems septorhinoplasty addresses

Deviated septum

The partition inside the nose pushed to one side, blocking airflow — straightened.

Enlarged turbinates

Reduced to open up the airway and ease congestion.

Nasal valve collapse

Supported with spreader or batten grafts so the airway doesn’t narrow on breathing in.

A crooked external nose

Straightened in line with the septum for a centred appearance.

Cosmetic refinement

Dorsal hump, tip shape, bridge and nostril width — refined in the same operation.

Problems after surgery

Breathing issues following an earlier operation — often combined with revision rhinoplasty.

What to expect

Your septorhinoplasty journey

  1. 1

    Consultation — £275

Mr Paun examines your nasal airway in detail and uses 3D imaging to show the planned external result, so the surgical plan targets the real cause of your obstruction.

  2. 2

    Surgery

Typically 1.5–3 hours under general anaesthetic in a fully accredited London hospital — internal incisions for the septum and turbinates, plus open or closed reshaping for the outside.

  3. 3

    Early recovery

A splint on the nose for about a week and some nasal congestion for a few weeks as the inside heals. Most people return to work in 1–2 weeks.

  4. 4

    Settling

Breathing improvement is often noticeable early; the external shape refines over 12–18 months.

Septorhinoplasty — FAQs

What is the difference between septoplasty, rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty?

Septoplasty straightens the septum — the partition inside the nose — to improve breathing, with no change to the outside. Rhinoplasty changes the external shape. Septorhinoplasty combines both: it corrects the airway and refines the appearance of the nose in a single operation and a single recovery.

Is septorhinoplasty available on the NHS?

Septoplasty (functional only) is sometimes available on the NHS for significant breathing problems, but the cosmetic component generally is not. Privately with Mr Paun you can address both the function and the appearance together — and you choose your surgeon.

Will my breathing actually improve?

When poor breathing is due to a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates or weak nasal valves, correcting those structures usually gives a clear improvement. Mr Paun assesses your airway carefully at consultation so the surgical plan targets the real cause.

How long does it take and what is the recovery?

Surgery is typically 1.5–3 hours under general anaesthetic in a fully accredited London hospital. A splint sits on the nose for about a week; nasal congestion settles over a few weeks. Most people are back to work within 1–2 weeks, with the external shape refining over 12–18 months.

Can it be combined with revision surgery?

Yes — many patients having revision rhinoplasty also need functional work to support a collapsed airway. See our revision rhinoplasty page.

How much does septorhinoplasty cost?

It depends on the work involved; you receive a personalised quote after your £275 consultation, and finance is available through Chrysalis Finance. See our rhinoplasty cost page.
